Simon the Superb and Wax Dave are definitely the best of these four. Of the other two, The Sub was probably the last place episode.
Simon the Superb. I came in with high expectations and the episode delivered. There were may things I liked here: Brittany as Simon's assistant (they work well together, a reminder of Simon For President), Miss Croner (something about her character can make an episode better, got the running name gag going as well), and the complexity of Simon's plan. Initially I didn't see it coming. I figured Simon would find a way to outdo Alvin though I didn't figure he would go to such an elaborate plan that counted on so many people (though Brittany wasn't initially satisfied with Simon's lack of audience, I enjoyed the fact that she stuck with him). The magic itself wasn't too bad either. The song, "Sweet Dreams," is one of the best of the week.
Next, The Sub. First of all, the name doesn't match the plot at all. It's as if the plot was changed and they forgot to change the episode's title. My first viewing of the episode wasn't great (I found it one of the worst I've seen and I was disappointed). True to myself I watched it again (I try to watch each episode at least twice before reviewing) and I found it a little better with some good moments (Alvin didn't know what a ticket was, maybe if you read it!). An about average episode. Perhaps the main reason was all the partying or just the fact that Alvin (somehow) got a teaching role. The episode didn't click for me and I wasn't a big fan of the song. The best point of this episode was probably learning the officer's name: Officer Davis.
Lights Camera Uh Oh was a little better than The Sub, though, again, I didn't like it much on my first viewing. Not much happened in the episode. Dave and the keys (though not a bad scene) took a sizable amount of the episode's time. Predictable Alvin would ruin the film (nice to see secret agent again), and, one part I liked, is that Alvin felt guilty for hurting Jeanette (contain my Alvinette feelings). Jeanette, though she puts up with many failures in this episode, she still has her breaking point. The episode really shows her patience. One point I was surprised on was Jeanette didn't accept their video at the end (they put a great deal of work into it). Not entirely sure how to take that, but they supported Jeanette's decision to use her own video. Finally, Jeanette doesn't let bad news stop her. Sometimes it's best to shrug and roll on.
Edit: How did I forget "Superstars?" Maybe because I couldn't hear it the first time I seen the episode? Anyway, a very catchy song. I love the sassiness? to it.
I disagree with Wax Dave being mediocre. I believe it was one of the best written episodes of the week (the episode description was a little off). The episode was an instant reminder of Whatever Happened to Dave Seville? The boys following Dave and misunderstanding the situation also reminded me of Lovesick Dave. The lady had wax body parts (which they thought were real) so it's understandable they didn't think he was completely wax (just dipped in). The police and doctor scenes were great. Let's just nail his ear on. Oh boy. This episode is one of those that could of easily been expanded into a 22 minute episode (give a little more time to the boys' adventure and show some Miss Miller/The Chipettes-dressed-as-the-boys interaction). Stop saying "yo!" "Rock N Roll Lover" was also a decent song.
