There isn't much of a background on this show, and what I mean by this is that all we really know is the name, characters, year it was aired and the original channel it aired on. No real info on syndication, what video format the episodes were on, etc. So I've been trying to piece this together, and maybe it will help with finding out why there is no DVD/iTunes/Blu-Ray release. Let's start with 1961; the year the show premeired. In 1961, the show first aired on CBS during prime time; the show was aired in black and white on CBS, but the show was produced in color. After the one season run on CBS prime time was over, the show was rerun on CBS (Saturday mornings) for a few years. The show was syndicated in the mid to late 1960's (I am guessing to channels other than CBS) with the name "Alvin and the Chipmunks". This is where things get a little hectic. Some sources claim that after the original CBS airing, the segments were mixed around, trying to air more than 26 episodes, when only 26 were made; thus making the illusion there were more than 26. I believe the show was stored on 16mm film (VHS was way too expensive at the time, and did any TV stations even use Betmax for storing shows?) and had to be stored SOMEWHERE with Badgasarian or CBS (although they probably both had copies; with CBS having copies of the original films). What I am guessing is that CBS didn't store them in a very good condition for film, and the film got damaged in every way possible. I know nothing about how they were aired in the 70's, so we'll skip directly to the 80's. In the 80's, the Chipmunks got revived and got a new show. So I'm guessing the 60's show got majorly pushed aside. However, at some point in the 80's a station (WFXT-25 Boston) aired The Alvin Show early in the morning. The quality was horrible; colors, tint, film damage, jumps, sloppy film cutting, and other things not worth mentioning. I'm not sure how the quality of the prints got so bad, but it probably had to do with duplicating the film. The show aired there, and as far as I know, didn't show up anywhere until the 90's. In 1994, The Alvin Show got 2 VHS releases featuring songs from the show (in sing-along format) by Disney (with a different name at the time). However, IN THE SAME YEAR, Nickelodeon was airing the show on their channel, although in a different order from the 80's reruns. So what I am thinking is that CBS and Badgasarian BOTH owned rights for the show, and since CBS and Nick are both from Viacom, CBS's rights went to Nick. Badgasarian sold the rights to the 60's AND 80's series to Disney for a few years, but ONLY for VHS releases. Around 1996, Disney had lost rights to the Chipmunks, and Nickelodeon stopped airing the show. So, the rights for CBS stayed with Viacom, while Badgasarian retained their rights from Disney. The show wasn't seen again, anywhere, for a decade. In 2006, CBS and Viacom split, with CBS being a standalone channel from then on. Around the time of the first CGI movie, Paramount Pictures began to release DVD with cartoons from the 80's show; but the 60's show was nowhere to be found. HOWEVER, in 2009, Badgasarian and Paramount Pictures (part of Viacom) released a DVD titled "The Very First Alvin Show", which featured one episode of the 60's show, along with a 80's episode and a special based on the Chipmunk history that was made in the 90's. The show was remastered, and the box said it was remastered "FROM 16MM FILM". However, after the release, the show once again faded away into obscurity. Paramount lost the AATC rights around 2010-2012, and Badgasarian and Viacom were the only people owning rights to the classic Chipmunks. The final part of this post confuses me even more. This year, a DVD with the 80's Chipmunk movie, "The Chipmunk Adventure", was released. The ONE special feature that came with it was a remastered musical segment from The Alvin Show. The segment was of the same quality as the 2009 DVD, but Paramount had not released this one. Badgasarian released it alone; no other company was involved. So maybe the whole show was remastered by Paramount in 2009, but never got to be released? I'm not sure about that, but it's possible. As of October 5, 2014, no news for a DVD release has appeared. So what does all this mean? Well, I have NO CLUE who owns rights to this show as of now. There have been MANY different companies involved with the show after the initial airing, and no information about the show's current owner has been released. So, what is the future of the show? No one really knows at the moment, but we can only hope it is good. Sorry about the long post; this is the end of it.
