The Chipmunks' Birthday Surprise is an Alvin and the Chipmunks book based on the Alvin and the Chipmunks episode Father's Day Muffins.

Synopsis[]

The Chipmunks try to sell muffins to earn money for Dave's birthday present.

Plot[]

The Chipmunks debate what they should get Dave for his birthday the following day when they see him tangled up in tape from his old tape recorder. Simon suggests they buy him a new player, though they only have a dollar between them. Theodore gives his brothers each a muffin as they think of a plan, suddenly deciding to sell his muffins. They run into Smith's Grocery and quickly convince the owner to order fifty dozen for tomorrow. Pressed for time, Alvin ignores measurements and cranks up the oven's temperature. All night the boys bang around the kitchen, having Dave believe the muffins are for a school event. The boys head to the grocery store in the morning but are told the baked goods must go after a rock-hard pastry is dropped on a lady's foot. Upset, Alvin tosses one outside to be caught by a dog, immediately giving him a new idea. At a pet store Alvin sells the lot to Mr. Winkler, and they rush off to purchase Dave's present. The boys hide the new recorder in his old one, but Dave, having enough, throws it out the window. They rush outside and pull out the new machine that luckily escaped damage. Dave hugs and thanks them, requesting some of Theodore's muffins but Theodore desperately declines.
