The Chipmunk Song Cover Art

"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" is an original (all versions) song sung by The Chipmunks. The original version was released as a single in 1958 and 1968 while the 2007 version was released in 2007 as a single. The song is sung in The Alvin Show episode Overworked Alvin and has been sung in multiple episodes of the Alvin and the Chipmunks television series, including the A Chipmunk Christmas special. The song is also sung in the first CGI/live-action film, Alvin and the Chipmunks, is a part of most of The Chipmunks' albums, and is included in the Alvin and the Chipmunks and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked video games.

  • Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. finished writing the song on November 7th, 1958.[1]
  • Three versions of the song were created before the Bagdasarian family decided on only one to be released: an instrumental, one called "In a Village Park," and "The Chipmunk Song."[2]
  • This is the first song to officially be credited to The Chipmunks and is their musical debut.
  • More than 2.5 million copies were sold in three weeks, the fastest selling record in 1958.[2]
  • The song charted #1 on the Hot 100 in 1958 and maintained its position for four weeks before falling in 1959.[3]
  • The song remained the only holiday-themed song to ever chart #1 on the Hot 100 until December 2019; Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" finally reached #1 on the chart 61 years later, 25 years after her song's original release.[4]
  • The song was nominated for four Grammy awards in 1959, winning three.[5]
  • On the episode Merry Christmas, Mr. Carroll, "The Chipmunk Song" was shown to be made by the presents they gave Dave (pencil, eraser, and a piece of paper).
  • In the special A Chipmunk Christmas, "Time for toys" is replaced with "Time for joy."
  • In Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the possums Crash and Eddie sing the first line of the song when they find out that their voices are high pitched.
  • A Smokey Bear radio PSA from 1975 featured the Chipmunks thanking people for preventing forest fires by singing to the tune of the song.
